Umbra Institute

Nestled in the historic center of Perugia, Italy, the Umbra Institute offers semester, year-long, and summer academic programs for United States college and university students.

Since its founding in 1999, the Umbra Institute has continued to distinguish itself as a provider of innovative programming where students learn both in and beyond the classroom in the vibrant city of Perugia through community engagement.

Whether students choose to pursue a curriculum taught by Umbra faculty or enroll directly at one of the local world-renowned Italian universities, they have Italian classmates and interact with the Perugian community on a daily basis.

Rich in art, architecture, and historical significance, Perugia boasts over 40,000 Italian and international students. The historic center is easy to explore by foot while the city’s central location offers easy access to other regions of Italy and Europe.

General Studies Program: courses offered in a wide variety of subjects. Nearly 80% of students participate in community engagement activities: service learning projects, academic internships, and volunteering.

Food Studies Program: courses on Italian food culture, sustainability, and the wine industry.

Direct Enrollment at UniversitĂ  per Stranieri: for students of all levels to focus exclusively on Italian language and culture.

Direct Enrollment at UniversitĂ  di Perugia: full immersion in the Italian university, also for science students.

Maymester and J-Term Programs.

Cooperative Education Learning (Co-Op): full-time work for a community partner as a compensated intern.
